Look out! It’s summer branch drop season…

We’d like to share with you some of our tips on why pruning in summer is important.

When the summer heat catches up with us there can be an increased risk of the phenomenon “Summer Branch Drop”. Just like drop bears, the summer branch drop can be unexpected, scary and dangerous.

So what causes this phenomenon, well on hot, calm summer afternoons long large horizontal limbs can become weak through excessive transpiration (evaporation of water from leaves). Due to the high heat during the day, trees have to transpire incredible amounts of water to stop their leaves drying out. In the evening, as temperatures ease and wind flow is minimal, branches can simply fall without any warning.

Be aware that older more mature trees are at a higher risk than the younger ones. If they have experienced one limb break they are more likely to have another.

We advise if you have concerns about your trees then give us a call and one of our professional staff can provide you with advice and a quote for any of your pruning needs. All pruning if required will be carried out to Australian Standard AS4373.

So what can you do this summer to keep your garden looking beautiful and remaining safe all year round… get your safety gear and equipment and start trimming your trees. If you don’t have the time, gear or patience then call Dickies Trees and we’ll send one of our specialists out to help.

Safety is number one and if you are unable to reach your limbs please don’t put yourself in harm’s way.

Give us a call and we’ll whack it on the head with a Dickie!
