The one thing that can save your garden

As experienced Tree Arborists in Perth, we understand what an Aussie garden endures hot and dry weather. If there was one secret we had for a healthy and plentiful garden, it would be mulch!

What actually is mulch you might ask? Most people stereotype mulch to be dry wood chips that aren’t really important for the health and ecosystem of soil. Mulch is actually a shielding layer of organic material that covers soil and surrounds plants. Not only does it preserve the water in your soil but it also acts as food and nourishment to the soil and plant roots beneath it. Pretty cool for an inexpensive product hey?

The reason why it’s so great to use mulch in Perth, is because it insulates the soil helping to provide a defence against the heat. I’m sure you’ve watered your plants in summer, and then a couple of hours later your soul looks dry to the roots? Mulch helps retain water keeping your plant roots moist and healthy.

Heaps of people ask us here at Dickies Trees, can we make our own mulch? And we say you sure can! Mulch can be made of almost any organic plant matter like – sawdust, wood chips, bark chips, leaves, moss, seaweed, wood ashes, stone, straw and even gravel. Jump online and you can find heaps of fun and easy DIY mulch methods.

Steps to adding mulch to your garden:

  1. Pick a garden bed or tree you wish to mulch
  2. Make sure the area you are mulching is weed free
  3. If you have it, dig in some compost before laying down the mulch for added nutrients
  4. Give the soil a really good long soak with water
  5. Apply the mulch, about 2 inches is best
  6. Enjoy your fresh new garden

Mulch should last up to a year. Try and mulch during Spring so your garden is protected in time for the hot weather ahead.

And there you have it! Our Dickies secret to a healthy, long-lasting garden.
