How to prevent winter roof flooding!
In Australia, our winters are mild, although our homes and gardens are still susceptible to roof flooding caused by blocked gutters and fallen branches.
It’s easy to neglect and forget about maintaining aspects of your house and garden during an Aussie winter, this is because we don’t get seasonal effects like snow and big storms to act as reminders for us to check our homes and gardens for winter damage. This doesn’t mean us Aussies can sit back and relax throughout winter! Our homes and gardens are effected by storms, rain and strong winds – resulting in blocked gutters, unsafe rooftops and fallen branches.
Have a read to learn some Dickies Tips on how you can prevent roof flooding this winter!
1) When was the last time you had a look at the state of your gutters and rooftop? You might be surprised at how much accumulated leaves, twigs, small branches and debris can build up. As the winter wind blows through your garden and home, it’s easy for seasonal debris to get stuck along the way. Letting leaves accumulate on your roof will stop you from seeing any holes or cracks in your roof, therefore leading to leaks and flooding. Also, a large amount of damp debris locks in moisture after some rain and can lead to flooding and rooftop damage.
2) Do you have trees overhanging your roof? This causes a constant amount of leaves and twigs falling straight onto your rood. Have the dickies Team come and trim or prune your overhanging trees so they can’t drop their leaves straight onto your home, therefore preventing any winter damage.
3) How do your roof tiles look? Any mismatched or a different colour to the rest? This could be a sign that you have a few damaged or missing tiles. This allows water to enter much easier into your roof, which can lead to floods and leakages. Have someone qualified come and repair or replace the state of your tiles, as this small fix now will save you a massive fix if you leave damage too long occurring in flooding or leakage. Trust us, the Dickies Team has seen it all!
4) It doesn’t matter if your large backyard trees are planted away from your home. During the case of a storm, strong winds can send heavy branches crashing onto your home from a distance. It’s important to have a qualified tree Arborist like the Dickies Team so survey your trees for any weak branches that would easily fall off during winter. This simple step will prevent your home from experiencing winter damage.
You owe it to your home and family to have their safety and financial security in mind. Ensuring your garden is safe during winter will prevent any damage from occurring, and will allow you to sleep soundly at night.
